Clarendon Spartans May 22, 2011

(May 22, 2011)

Good win for the Liners yesterday, first of the season, at windy Patcham Place.
Panch won the toss. The wicket was well grassed but rock-hard so we knew the bounce would be uneven and our attack exploited it.
Ben and Michka did well with the new ball, Ben taking a wicket and Michka 2 and they were soon 30-3. At one stage the only thing which seemed to keep the scoreboard ticking over was wides.
Stan came on to wreak his normal havoc. He finished with 3-28 but the bowling honours went to Dave Carter. Orson took 4-15 and bowled superbly and just after 4pm Spartans were all out for 91.
Barnacle hit the first ball of the reply for four but then fell lbw for 6. Kev Collins was soon into his stride, the dreads flowing in the wind like Bob Marley Hammersmith Odeon circa 1977. Beefy fell cheaply, but the earlier purchase of some bedding plants from the garden centre at Lewes made sure his day wasn't totally wasted :)
Kev hit a couple of sixes on his way to 34 but when he was out a somewhat suspect middle order was exposed. Ian Cowell avoided another duck but Gip didn't - four in a row, his last Headliners runs coming the day England lost to Germany in the last World Cup :( To be told that Wolves had scored their second goal just as he was lbw put the tin hat on the day lol.
No problem though. 52-6 was the low point of the reply as Panch made an undefeated 26 and Stan 13 not out and we had with 18 overs to spare.
Nice oppo and unbeaten as we head into the last weekend in May. Been a while since that happened!
